IS MMA TRAINING FOR YOU?
The evolution of MMA has at some time or another peaked the interests of nearly every person it has crossed paths with. From it’s controversial nature or it’s rooted martial arts techniques MMA offers something for everyone, but is it right for you? On the playground everyone thinks they’re tough, but the inside of an octagon can turn any wannabe MMA superstar into a scared little puppy dog. I know cause I’ve seen it! Unfortunatley many gyms these days offer delusions of grandeur and unfortunatley I’ve seen many amateur fighters taken out of the cage on a stretchers. This sport is no joke. Focus and commitment go hand in hand with any successful fighter, but sometimes that’s not even enough. Through the pain and the sacrifice you have to want it more than the next guy. Be prepared to get your ass kicked for awhile. Consider it your right of passage. Choose your school wisely and do your research cause it’s your health and career that lies in the balance.
EQUIPMENT
My teeth and my nuts… 2 of my favorite things! I like to protect them. Buy yourself a couple of mouth pieces in case you lose one. I always wear my mouth piece while I train, so that it’s second nature to have it in during a fight. Chicks don’t dig guys with missing teeth. Buy a cup and wear it. It’s uncomfortable, yes I know, but you’ll get used to it. Don’t forget to pick up some MMA gloves and shin protectors. Most large retail sporting goods stores carry gloves, or you can order some off of the internet.
DO I NEED TO BE A MARTIAL ARTS EXPERT?
You don’t have to be a martial arts expert to be great at MMA. You do need a solid foundation in grappling and striking, but you don’t have to be world class in any one particular art. With dedication, conditioning and great defense, you’ll have a much easier time making it through your first couple of fights.
ARE THERE AMATEURS IN MMA?
There is an amateur mixed martial arts. These days to become a successful MMA fighter, beginning as an amateur is very important. There are so many great fighters, so it’s important to work on your skills in an environment that’s conducive to learning and perfecting your skills. That means fighting other amateurs with the same skill level. Even though most amateur fights are regulated, they’re still dangerous. Only compete in promotions that are regulated by it’s governing state. Usually sanctioned promotions will at least provide you with insurance for your fight incase your injured.
